Large emergency response after car enters river in England
A car has gone into the River Wear in Sunderland near Wearmouth Bridge, prompting a major emergency services response. Northumbria Police has asked people to avoid the area while crews work at the scene.
A significant emergency operation is underway in Sunderland, north-east England, after a car entered the River Wear near Wearmouth Bridge on Wednesday afternoon.
Northumbria Police said it received a report of the car going into the river at around 13:30 BST. The force has asked members of the public to avoid the area while emergency crews respond.
Multiple agencies at the scene
Images from the location show a large number of ambulances, police cars and a fire engine lined up along the river bank, where a metal railing has been damaged. Two rescue boats operated by RNLI volunteers were also seen out on the river.
The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) confirmed it had dispatched several crews to the incident, including an air ambulance. The service said it was working alongside the coastguard and police as the response continues.
No further details have yet been released about whether anyone was in the vehicle or whether there are any casualties. Rescue efforts on the river remain ongoing.
