Devastation near Spokane

Uncontrolled wildfires continued to burn in eastern Washington on Sunday, prompting thousands of residents to flee their homes in the vicinity of Spokane, the state's second-largest city. Authorities reported that 5,000 households were evacuated, while about 600 buildings — including homes, businesses and other structures — have been destroyed. No deaths have been reported so far.

The flames have scorched several square miles and remain active. This fire is one of dozens of current blazes across the western United States, putting significant pressure on firefighting crews and equipment. In neighboring Idaho and Oregon, emergency teams are on their tenth day of battling a separate large wildfire that covers hundreds of square miles.

Resources under pressure

With many large fires burning simultaneously, firefighting efforts are increasingly difficult to coordinate. The situation in eastern Washington remains tense, and authorities are continuing evacuation measures to keep residents safe. There has been no confirmation of additional injuries or deaths, but the damage so far is substantial. The coming days will be critical as crews try to gain control of the numerous active fires in the region.
