Latvian Nationals Detained After Entering UK Air Force Base Released on Bail
Two Latvian citizens detained on Thursday for unlawfully entering a Royal Air Force base in Cambridgeshire have been released on bail. Police say nothing currently links the case to last month's incident at the Fairford base.
British police have said that two Latvian nationals, who were detained on Thursday on suspicion of unlawfully entering a Royal Air Force base in Cambridgeshire, in south-east England, have been released on bail. The investigation is continuing, and the key question remains the men's motive.
Helen Flanagan, the head of London's counter-terrorism policing, who is leading the inquiry, said that at present nothing suggests the case is connected to the incident at the Fairford base last month.
Lines of inquiry
Flanagan said the investigation is being carried out in close cooperation with Ministry of Defence police and Cambridgeshire Constabulary. According to her, one of the main lines of inquiry is still to establish the possible motive for the men being at the site, including whether it could be linked to any criminal activity.
She urged the public to remain vigilant and to contact police if they notice anything suspicious.
How the incident was discovered
Ministry of Defence police, while carrying out a security patrol at the Molesworth base, found an abandoned vehicle. Cambridgeshire police officers also arrived at the scene and, together with their Ministry of Defence colleagues, carried out an additional search of the area.
The source does not give the names or ages of those detained, or any specific charges.
