Great Britain secure Davis Cup Finals spot with win over Ecuador

Great Britain have qualified for this November's Davis Cup Finals after completing a 3-0 sweep of Ecuador on home soil in London. The decisive point came on Sunday when doubles pair Henry Patten and Neal Skupski beat Gonzalo Escobar and Diego Hidalgo 6-3, 6-4.

Britain had already taken a commanding lead on Saturday, when both singles players won in front of a sold-out crowd at the Copper Box Arena. Toby Samuel, who has climbed from outside the world's top 250 to 95th over the past year, recovered from a set down on his Davis Cup debut to beat Andres Andrade 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. British number one Arthur Fery then added a comfortable 7-5, 6-0 win over Alvaro Guillen Meza.

Captain Leon Smith faced a difficult build-up to the tie. Jack Draper had already ended his season early, Jan Choinski and Jacob Fearnley were both injured, and Cameron Norrie withdrew on Friday after feeling arm pain in practice. Despite the depleted squad, the replacements delivered.

Patten and Skupski, who do not play together on the ATP Tour, did not face a single break point against their Ecuadorian opponents. Skupski, 36, who made his Davis Cup debut in 2019 and was playing his 16th tie, said it had been an honour to represent his country in front of a home crowd.

Great Britain had not reached the knockout stage since 2023. The Finals will be held in Bologna from 24 to 29 November, with three-time defending champions Italy already qualified automatically as hosts.

Elsewhere, the United States will miss the quarter-finals for a second straight year after losing 3-2 to the Czech Republic; Ben Shelton lost to Jakub Mensik in the deciding rubbers before Jiri Lehecka sealed the tie. South Korea, Austria, Canada and Germany — the latter powered by two singles wins from Alexander Zverev — also progressed, while Spain led Chile 2-0 with their tie still to finish.
