UK Officially Nationalizes British Steel
The UK government announced on Thursday it has fully nationalized British Steel, taking the company into state ownership after taking over its day-to-day management from China's Jingye Group last year. This is the first time since 1988 that the company is state-owned.

The UK government announced on Thursday that it has taken steelmaker British Steel into full state ownership, nationalizing the company. This move follows the takeover of its day-to-day management from China's Jingye Group in April last year after an emergency rescue plan was approved.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the decision secures the future of steelmaking in the UK, protects skilled jobs, and preserves a vital manufacturing capability for the country. It is the first time British Steel has been in state hands since 1988.
Last April, Starmer called an emergency session of parliament to pass a law blocking Jingye Group's plan to close two blast furnaces at the Scunthorpe plant. The nationalization ensures continued operation and stability in this strategically important industry.
