UK to refuel Saudi jets to help counter Houthi attacks
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced that Britain has agreed to provide air-to-air refuelling support to Saudi Arabian jets defending energy infrastructure against Iran-backed Houthi fighters.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced that Britain agreed to a Saudi Arabian request for military support — specifically, air-to-air refuelling of Saudi jets to help them defend energy infrastructure against Iran-backed Houthi fighters. According to The Guardian, an RAF Voyager aircraft will carry out the refuelling for several weeks. This marks Burnham's first military deployment decision since taking office.
The move follows Houthi advances into areas near the strategically vital Bab al-Mandab strait, which Saudi Arabia uses as an alternative route for oil exports to bypass disruption in the Strait of Hormuz. In addition to this new support, the UK's Sky Sabre air defence system is already operating in the region.

Burnham stressed that the decision is also tied to the domestic economy — turmoil in the Middle East has pushed up global energy prices, putting the UK economy under heavy inflationary pressure and driving government borrowing costs to multi-year highs, just weeks before a crucial budget from the new government. "We have received a request from Saudi Arabia for military support and... I agreed to that request for defensive air-to-air refuelling. On cost of living pressures and acting to secure the interests of Britain, the wider region... we need to keep those pathways open," Burnham said.
Meeting with Trump
The announcement came en route to the UN General Assembly session in New York, where Burnham is set to hold his first meeting with US President Donald Trump. Burnham plans to urge Trump to de-escalate the situation around Iran, warning that "dark clouds of global instability" are directly affecting people's lives worldwide. According to The Guardian, the meeting takes place against a difficult backdrop — Trump is reportedly still angry that the UK refused to support US military action against Iran, and tensions over defence spending levels persist.
Burnham's team is also reportedly hoping to avoid a clash over energy policy — the prime minister plans to signal to Trump that he favours more North Sea drilling, including development of the Jackdaw gasfield. Burnham is also expected to address artificial intelligence and the war in Ukraine during his UN appearances.
