UK farmer jailed eight years over motorcyclist's death caused by defective tractor
A 61-year-old farmer in England has been sentenced to eight years in prison for causing the death of 26-year-old motorcyclist Dr Steven Lee, whose tractor and trailer had multiple dangerous defects, including non-working brakes.
Worcester Crown Court sentenced farmer Philip Baker, 61, to eight years in prison for causing death by dangerous driving. The case relates to a collision on 11 August 2022 on the A40 near Ganarew, Ross-on-Wye, when Baker's tractor and trailer collided with a motorbike ridden by 26-year-old Dr Steven Lee, who died at the scene.
Baker was found guilty on 28 July following a trial, and on Tuesday the court also handed him a nine-year driving ban.
At the time of the collision, Baker had been transporting straw bales, travelling from Walford towards Monmouth. Investigators found the tractor and trailer had several dangerous defects. The main cause identified was the absence of an amber beacon that should have warned other road users of the slow-moving vehicle. Additionally, the trailer's brakes did not work and were not connected to the tractor cab, the hydraulic line linking the two was poorly maintained, the lights cable was held together with baler twine, and the trailer was overloaded with straw bales. Baker had been driving well below the speed limit at the time.
Lee's brother, Danny Sargeant, said after the sentencing that the four-year wait for justice had been "incredibly painful" for the family but that they could now begin to look forward. He said the judge had made clear his brother bore no blame for the crash, despite a tendency for people to assume motorcyclists are at fault in such collisions. Sargeant recalled his brother's achievements, including teaching piano and flying planes as a teenager, describing him as "incredible" and his death as a huge loss for everyone who knew him.
