UK police evacuate buildings near air base used by US forces

Police in western England have evacuated a number of buildings in the village of Welford, located close to RAF Fairford, an air base also used by the United States Air Force. Several people have been detained on suspicion of offences related to explosives.

Gloucestershire Police described the situation as a serious incident, while stating that it is currently being contained. Army explosive ordnance disposal specialists are on site examining several vehicles.

Citing officials, broadcaster BBC reported that the investigation is being led by counter-terrorism police. Authorities have not officially confirmed that the incident is directly connected to the air base itself.

Government and US response

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he is receiving continuous updates on the serious incident. He expressed gratitude to emergency services for their swift action, which led to the detention of several suspects and the implementation of measures to ensure public safety. He added that it would be inappropriate to provide further comment while the investigation is ongoing.

A US Air Force spokesperson said that personnel stationed at RAF Fairford remain vigilant, but declined to provide additional details citing security considerations.

RAF Fairford has previously served as a base for US Air Force operations in Europe, underlining the strategic significance of the area where the incident took place.
