Over 600 Flights Cancelled in UK After Technical Failure
A technical glitch in air traffic control systems disrupted flights across British airports on 8 September, with more than 600 flights cancelled by 18:00 local time. London was the worst affected area.
Major flight disruption hit UK airports on 8 September after a technical glitch in air traffic control systems. According to Sky News, hundreds of flights were cancelled or delayed. Data from the flight-tracking website Flightradar24 showed that 625 flights had been cancelled by 18:00 British time.
The London area was particularly affected. Heathrow saw 132 departing flights cancelled and another 199 delayed. As a whole, London accounted for 60% of all cancellations. For Ryanair alone, cancellations and delays affected around 65,000 passengers.
The National Air Traffic Service said its systems had started to recover, but most airports had not yet returned to normal operations. This is not the first time British aviation has suffered such disruption: a similar technical glitch in July 2025 affected airports in London and other British cities.
Separately, an airport in Romania temporarily suspended operations because of an air raid warning.
