UK debate over teen social media ban continues amid TikTok probe

A broad debate is unfolding in the United Kingdom over proposals to limit young people's access to social media apps. Origins of the campaign

A married couple, Daisy Greenwell and Joe Ryrie, played a key role in bringing the issue to prominence, with their campaigning credited for catching the attention of Prime Minister Keir Starmer and influencing the push toward restricting children's social media use.

Starmer has since handed responsibility for working out the practical details to minister Andy Burnham, who now faces the challenge of determining exactly how "social media" should be defined for the purposes of any ban.

TikTok under scrutiny

Separately, the UK's online safety watchdog has opened an investigation into TikTok over its child safety measures. Regulators are specifically concerned about the platform's use of "age inference," a method TikTok uses to estimate users' ages.

While the push to protect children online enjoys political momentum, its practical implementation — from basic definitions to technical enforcement — continues to generate disagreement among policymakers, the tech industry and the public.
