New UK travel restriction to take effect at all airports from October 1

Travellers heading to the United Kingdom have faced a steady stream of new requirements throughout 2026, and from October 1 another restriction affecting all of the country's airports is set to take effect. Additional changes are also expected on October 8.

Changes introduced during the year

Since February 25, the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement has been applied in full. Although the ETA system already existed before that date, it effectively became a mandatory travel condition from that point on, with carriers checking passengers' ETA, eVisa or other documents proving their right to travel to the UK.

Just weeks later, on April 8, fees for both the ETA and UK visas rose. The ETA fee increased from £16 to £20, while the fee for a Standard Visitor visa valid for up to six months rose from £127 to £135.

From July 1, the UK Visas and Immigration service (UKVI) stopped issuing visa vignettes — stickers placed in passports — to new applicants whose applications had been approved. Instead, applicants now receive an eVisa, a digital record of their immigration status. Before travelling, eVisa holders must check their UKVI account and make sure it lists the passport or travel document they intend to use, since a mismatch can cause problems at boarding or delays at border control.

From July 31, the deadline for submitting an advance customs declaration was extended. Goods can now be declared online up to 120 hours before arrival in the UK, compared with the previous 72-hour window.
