GB Boxers Guaranteed Three Medals at European Championships

Great Britain's boxing team is guaranteed at least three medals at the European Championships in Bulgaria after Chantelle Reid, Damar Thomas and Abdul Burton all advanced to the semi-final stage.

Reid delivered a dominant 5-0 victory over Ireland's Evelyn Igharo in the women's light-middleweight division at the Asics Arena Sports Hall in Sofia. The 28-year-old, a Commonwealth Games silver medallist, moves on to face Serbia's Milena Matovic in Wednesday's semi-final.

Thomas secured the same 5-0 scoreline against Georgia's Nikoloz Begadze in the men's super-heavyweight category. The 21-year-old will next meet Azerbaijan's Mahammad Abdullayev for a place in the final.

Burton, 20, edged out home fighter and Olympic bronze medallist Javier Ibanez by a narrow 3-2 margin, setting up a semi-final against Turkey's Semih Gumus. He said the win required digging in when things turned against him and showing what he is capable of.

More Fights to Come

Four more British boxers — Lauren Mackie, Amy Broadhurst, Callum Makin and Oladimeji Shittu — are set to compete in Wednesday's quarter-finals. However, more than half of Britain's 15-strong squad has already been eliminated from the tournament.

On Tuesday, flyweight Ruby White lost 3-2 to Olympic silver medallist Hatice Akbas of Turkey, while Emily Asquith was beaten 5-0 by Ireland's Lisa O'Rourke in the light-heavyweight division. In the men's heavyweight category, Commonwealth Games champion Isaac Okoh was eliminated with a 3-0 loss to Germany's Kevin Lebowski.
