Arrest and Investigation

Devon and Cornwall Police announced on Friday the arrest of a 26-year-old man on suspicion of murdering Ann Widdecombe. The suspect remains in custody, and authorities have stated that the incident is not being treated as terrorism or politically motivated.

The investigation was launched after officers were called to Widdecombe's home in southwest England around midday on Thursday and found the 78-year-old dead with serious injuries. Forensic examinations are ongoing at the property. Police described the investigation as in its early stages but moving at a significant pace.

Political Career

Widdecombe served as a Conservative Member of Parliament from 1987 to 2010 and held several junior ministerial positions under Prime Minister John Major. She later joined the Brexit Party and the far-right, anti-immigration Reform UK party.

She was known for her socially conservative views, including opposition to abortion and to equalizing the age of consent for homosexual and heterosexual relationships. She also defended a policy of shackling pregnant prisoners during childbirth to prevent escape.

After leaving Parliament, Widdecombe appeared on the TV talent show "Strictly Come Dancing" in 2010 and became a popular figure. She later served as a Member of the European Parliament from 2019 to 2020. Her most recent role was as immigration spokesperson for Reform UK.

Reactions and Condolences

Outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed condolences, calling the news "really shocking" and highlighting Widdecombe's many years of distinguished service. Labour politician Andy Burnham, likely to become the next prime minister, also offered his deepest condolences.

Two serving British MPs have been murdered in the past decade: Labour MP Jo Cox in 2016 and Conservative MP David Amess in 2021.

Former colleagues from both the Conservative and Reform UK parties paid tribute to Widdecombe before details of the murder inquiry were released. Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson described her on X as "a heroic Brexiteer and a great speaker who could move Tory audiences to such ecstasy that she was a very hard act to follow."
