UK police arrest five suspects over alleged plot to attack US air base

UK law enforcement has detained five men suspected of plotting to break into the RAF Fairford air base and damage American strategic bombers stationed there, aircraft that are being used in operations against Iran.

According to police, a report came in around 00:45 on Sunday about three suspicious trucks heading toward the base. The vehicles were intercepted in the nearby Welford area. Bomb disposal specialists with a robot were called to the scene due to a high risk of detonation. Because of the danger, police set up a 400-metre security perimeter and evacuated residents from 85 nearby homes.

The men were initially held under the Explosives Act, but their alleged actions were later reclassified as terrorism. Vicki Evans, senior national coordinator for the Metropolitan Police's counter-terrorism command, said the investigation is at an early stage and that all five men remain in custody.

US President Donald Trump praised the work of law enforcement, saying the suspects had already been under investigation, that they intended to cause serious damage to the installation, and that cooperation with British authorities produced a strong result. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham urged the public to avoid speculation until the official investigation concludes.

Why the base matters

RAF Fairford is a key US military site in Britain, used by Washington under a bilateral agreement dating back to the Cold War. It hosts the headquarters of the 501st Combat Support Wing and the US Air Force's 420th Air Base Squadron. American bombers currently fly missions from the base to carry out limited strikes on Iranian military targets.

News of heightened security at the base emerged after a Reuters report. The Financial Times reported in August that Iran had begun considering possible strikes on US facilities in southeastern European countries as a way to raise the stakes amid further escalation with Washington. British intelligence services have previously noted increased activity by proxy groups linked to Tehran, and law enforcement had warned of a growing risk of sabotage in the UK amid the Middle East conflict.
