UK police given extra time to question Manchester plot suspects
British police have been granted additional time to question two men arrested on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack that may have targeted the Jewish community in Manchester.
Greater Manchester Police have been given more time to continue questioning two men detained on suspicion of offences under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000, the force confirmed on Tuesday.
According to sources cited by the BBC, the suspected plot was described as "fairly imminent" and had reached the later stages of planning.
As part of the investigation, officers carried out searches at two properties — one on Epworth Street in Liverpool and another on Lancaster Road in Salford.
The arrests came as Jewish communities mark Yom Kippur, regarded as the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
A spokesperson for the Community Security Trust, which coordinates security for Jewish communities across the UK, said on Tuesday that the alleged plot was "utterly chilling," coming so close to the anniversary of last year's terrorist attack at Heaton Park Synagogue. The spokesperson added that the case served as another reminder of the serious terrorist threat currently facing Jewish communities.
