UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a social media ban for children under 16 as part of a broader online safety drive. The proposed ban aims to be even more stringent than the world's first such ban, introduced by Australia last year.

Many parents have welcomed the proposal, seeing it as a necessary step to protect children from harmful content and excessive screen time. However, scientists have pointed out the lack of strong evidence supporting the effectiveness of outright bans. Some researchers argue that bans may not achieve their intended goals, as young people can find ways to circumvent restrictions.

Campaigners have also criticised the plan, claiming it lets social media companies off the hook from making meaningful changes to their platforms. They argue that instead of simply banning access, the government should push for stricter safety measures and better content moderation from tech companies.

In a podcast discussion, host Ian Sample, joined by co-host Madeleine Finlay, explored what the current evidence says about the harms of social media and the potential impact of a ban. They noted that while some studies suggest a link between social media use and mental health issues, causality remains unproven. The long-term effects of banning social media for under-16s are still uncertain.
