UK PM Burnham deepens diplomatic push with France over Russia

Britain's new Prime Minister Andy Burnham is expanding his diplomatic engagement over the war in Russia and Ukraine. As part of this effort, he is set to host French President Emmanuel Macron in London.

Visit to Kyiv

On Monday, Burnham was the only leader from the so-called E3 group — the UK, France and Germany — present in Kyiv. During the visit, he announced a new Anglo-French partnership, signaling deeper bilateral cooperation on supporting Ukraine.

Germany left in the shade

Burnham's assertive move has been read as a sign that Britain is taking the lead in European diplomacy toward Russia, while Germany's chancellor Merz remained less visible at this moment. This points to a shifting balance of influence among Europe's major powers on issues of security and support for Kyiv.

Next stop: London

Following the Kyiv trip, Burnham plans to continue his diplomatic push by hosting Macron in London, a move that fits into a broader effort to strengthen UK-France cooperation on security matters. The step comes alongside other foreign policy efforts by the new prime minister, including managing challenges facing the Foreign Office and allies' cautious response to U.S. calls for a naval patrol of the Strait of Hormuz.
