British armed forces conducted the first operation of its kind early Sunday in the English Channel, intercepting a Russian shadow fleet vessel. Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that Royal Marines and officers from the National Crime Agency boarded the oil tanker, which is under sanctions, during a six-hour operation.
The vessel, identified as "Smyrtos," will be moved to an anchorage off the south coast of England, where it will be monitored for any environmental or safety issues. The operation was supported by aircraft from the Fleet Air Arm, a Royal Air Force plane, and the warships HMS Sutherland and HMS Ledbury.
Starmer stated that the operation is another blow to Russia and reminds those supporting Putin's war in Ukraine that they cannot hide. He praised all involved, including the armed forces and law enforcement agencies, who work around the clock to ensure the country's security.
Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis emphasized that such operations require skill, professionalism, and courage, and thanked the personnel. He added that Russia relies on its shadow fleet to finance its conflict in Ukraine, and this detention is a blow to Putin's illegal war.
