GB's Glave and Azu sweep gold and silver in European 100m final
British sprinter Glave won the men's 100m title at the European Championships on home soil, with teammate Azu taking silver a day after Amy Hunt's women's 100m victory.
Great Britain's sprint dominance at the European Championships continued on home soil as Glave won the men's 100m final, with compatriot Azu finishing second to complete a British one-two. The result came just a day after Amy Hunt claimed gold in the women's 100m at the same championships.
Glave has enjoyed a breakthrough season, dipping under 10 seconds for the first time in legal conditions to win his first British title in June. He has since run sub-10 six times this year across various conditions, including a victory over in-form Italian sprinter Marcell Jacobs in Italy.
Building to the title
Glave looked in control throughout the championships, dominating his semi-final before executing a near-perfect run in the final itself. He first drew attention as a junior, clocking 10.21 seconds at age 17 in 2017 — at the time the fastest mark in the world for his age group.
His career since has been repeatedly interrupted by injuries, including a fractured back. This season, however, he has been able to train consistently, allowing him to finally claim the title he believes he was capable of winning two years ago.
His recent improvement stems largely from work on the opening 40 metres of his race. In the final, Glave took the lead by the 30-metre mark and held it comfortably to the line, continuing to celebrate well beyond the finish.
