UK-Mauritius Chagos sovereignty deal stalls as ageing exiles fear running out of time

Renewed talks over the stalled UK-Mauritius agreement on Chagos Islands sovereignty have revived hope of resettlement, but ageing Chagossians fear they may run out of time.

Talks between the United Kingdom and Mauritius over transferring sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago have stalled, but renewed negotiations have recently resumed, reviving hope among Chagossians who have long awaited the chance to return home.

The Chagossian people were removed from the islands decades ago and have lived in exile ever since. The planned agreement between London and Port Louis was meant to resolve the long-running sovereignty dispute, but its finalization has been repeatedly delayed.

The resumption of talks has rekindled hope for those wishing to return to their homeland. However, many exiled Chagossians are now elderly, and they fear time is running out — there is a real risk that some will not live to see the deal finalized or to experience a return themselves.

Uncertainty over how the renewed negotiations will proceed raises concerns that the process could drag on even further, leaving the ageing Chagossian community without clarity about their future. The status of the islands has long been a matter of international attention, and a resolution would mean the chance for Chagossians to finally return to the land from which they or their ancestors were once forcibly removed.

For many in the community, each additional delay reduces the number of people who might personally witness a homecoming, adding urgency to calls for the talks to move forward.
