High mileage isn't a verdict – used cars experts say not to write off
German magazine AUTO BILD, drawing on AutoScout24's analysis of listings, says high mileage on a used car doesn't automatically mean a bad buy — full service history matters far more. The BMW 520d is cited as an example where higher mileage can mean significant savings.
When buying a used car, the odometer is usually the first thing buyers check. As soon as it shows 100,000, 150,000 or more kilometres, many shoppers cross that car off their list immediately. Experts, however, warn that high mileage alone doesn't mean a vehicle's best years are behind it.
Maintenance matters more than the number on the dial
German publication AUTO BILD, using an analysis of listings from the AutoScout24 platform, compiled several used car models worth considering even when the odometer shows well over 100,000 kilometres. The decisive factor, according to the analysis, isn't the mileage figure itself but how well the car has been maintained over the years.
BMW 520d – an example where more kilometres means a lower price
Among the recommended models is the BMW 520d (F10/F11 generation), with particular emphasis on units built between 2013 and February 2017. From November 2014, the model was also available with a 190-horsepower B47 diesel engine.
In the listings analysed, a BMW 520d with roughly 150,000 kilometres on the clock sold for an average of about €16,600 — around €2,400 less than comparable cars with under 100,000 kilometres.
AUTO BILD stresses, though, that a vehicle's history is especially important in such cases. A complete, verifiable service record can matter far more than a relatively low odometer reading, since it points to consistent, careful upkeep throughout the car's life.
