Liepāja opens former Bank of Latvia building to visitors
The former Bank of Latvia branch building in Liepāja, once used to store up to 100 million euros, is now open to visitors as it is being converted into new storage space for the Liepāja Museum's collections. Guided tours are currently available at set times.
A building in Liepāja that once housed a branch of the Bank of Latvia has opened its doors to the public after standing empty for years. The building was closed in 2019 when the Bank of Latvia ended operations at its Liepāja branch, and for a long time it was unclear what would become of the space.
Museum collection and guided tours
The building is now being converted into modern storage space for the Liepāja Museum's open collection. While the renovation work continues, visitors can currently tour the building at designated times with a guide, seeing the rooms that once held as much as 100 million euros.
The museum-organized tours have drawn considerable interest, attracting both Liepāja residents and visitors to the city. One tour participant, Māris, said he had never been inside the building before, noting that it is not normally open to the public.
Tribute to the building's architect
In the future, a dedicated space within the building will also be set aside as a tribute to its architect, Pauls Makss Bertšs.
