The Liepāja city municipality has submitted for public consultation a draft amendment to binding regulation No. 39, "On Municipal Support for Sports Project Implementation in Liepāja," according to Kristīne Kopštāle, public relations specialist at the Liepāja Sports Department. Residents and representatives of the sports sector may submit their opinions and proposals on the draft until August 25.

Submitted feedback will be compiled and reflected in the explanatory note accompanying the draft before it moves forward for review by municipal committees and the city council.

What is changing

The amendments aim to clarify how the municipality supports sports and active recreation projects and to improve the process of allocating funding. Conditions for individual athlete support are being refined: a high achievement will now be defined as placing 1st-6th at world, European or international-level competitions, or 1st-3rd at Latvian championships. Breaking an existing record or achieving a result not previously reached by a Liepāja athlete may also count as a high achievement.

Requirements for competition organizers are also changing. Applicants will no longer be required to have at least one year of experience organizing competitions themselves, as long as staff available to them hold such experience. This opens the door for newer organizations with the necessary competence to apply for support.

Funding

The approved 2026 municipal budget allocates 1,646,700 euros for organizing and participating in sports competitions and supporting athletes and teams, while 1,650,000 euros is planned for these purposes in 2027.

How to submit feedback

Opinions can be submitted until August 25 through the Liepāja e-services portal, in person at customer service centers at Rožu iela 6 or Peldu iela 5, by mail to Rožu iela 6, Liepāja, or via email to pasts@liepaja.lv with a secure electronic signature. The detailed draft regulation is available on the municipality's website.
