Liepāja hosted a regional visit on July 15, 2026, with over 70 Latvian honorary consuls from 39 countries, according to the municipality. The purpose of the visit was to familiarize the consuls with current developments in Liepāja, particularly in business and economics, as well as the city's program as the European Capital of Culture 2027.
At the "Lielais Dzintars" concert hall, the honorary consuls and their companions were addressed by Liepāja City Council Chairman Gunārs Ansiņš, who presented the city's profile. Jānis Lapiņš, advisor to the manager of the Liepāja Special Economic Zone, spoke about the local economy and business environment, while Inta Šoriņa, Chair of the Board of the "Liepāja 2027" Foundation, presented updates on the Capital of Culture program and its key events.
Following the presentations, a practical discussion was held on Liepāja's opportunities and how the consuls could contribute to promoting the city. The consuls inquired about municipal support for film production, the ecological status of the Baltic Sea, attraction of young specialists, availability of real estate for young families, offers for foreign investors, international cooperation in cultural events, and the use of green energy. Challenges after the 2027 Capital of Culture year were also discussed, focusing on maintaining a long-term positive impact, establishing new traditions, and continuing initiated initiatives.
During the visit, the consuls toured the "Lielais Dzintars" concert hall, visited the Liepāja Industrial Park, and explored the historic Karosta district to see business development areas firsthand.
The visit was part of the 12th Latvian Honorary Consuls Meeting organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from July 13 to 15, 2026. The meeting aimed to inform about Latvia's foreign policy, security priorities, and opportunities for bilateral economic and cultural cooperation.
