A Liepāja resident named Laura shared her disappointment on the social network "Threads" after buying a "Herring in Fur Coat" salad at the "Mego" grocery store. After eating about half the portion, she still hadn't found a single piece of herring in it.

In her post, Laura wrote that the salad turned out to be just a plain vegetable coat without its main ingredient. She added that other products, such as meat salads, can sometimes also come without meat, warning shoppers to be cautious.

Reactions from other users

The post prompted responses from several people. One woman admitted that she actually prefers "Herring in Fur Coat" without the herring — in her view, the version sold by "Rimi" without herring wasn't quite the same, though she still associates the dish with herring from her childhood. She suggested that herring might be used during preparation, but the vegetable layer dominates the taste on the plate.

Other commenters reacted with humor, joking about where the herring might have gone — some suggested it "swam away" since the sea is nearby, or that it left the fur coat behind in the heat. Others noted that it isn't winter yet, so herring doesn't need a fur coat.

The article does not mention whether the "Mego" store has issued an official comment on the incident.
