Liepāja residents raise concerns over planned flood dam

The city of Liepāja is preparing to build a flood protection dam approximately one and a half kilometers long, with an estimated cost of four million euros. The aim of the project is to protect homes and streets located near Liepāja Lake from the risk of flooding.
The project is currently at the design stage, and its final form has not yet been approved. According to TV Kurzeme, some local residents have questions and concerns about the planned construction, worrying that the dam could worsen rather than improve the situation in their neighborhood.
Municipality holds meeting with residents
To hear residents' objections and make adjustments if necessary, the Liepāja municipality has invited locals to a meeting. This approach allows the concerns of directly affected residents to be taken into account before construction begins, with the aim of finding a solution that satisfies both safety requirements and residents' worries.
The issue of reducing flood risk around Liepāja Lake is not new, but this particular dam project marks the first time such a concrete plan, backed by defined funding, has been put forward. The municipality intends to continue the dialogue with residents before a final decision is made on implementing the project.
