Liepāja football coach undergoes 12-hour cancer surgery in Riga

A young football coach from Liepāja, Tjago Bomfim Oliveira Da Silva, has undergone an especially complex operation lasting more than 12 hours at Riga East Clinical University Hospital (RAKUS) to treat an extensively spread tumor in his abdominal cavity. Chemotherapy was administered during the same procedure.

Armands Sīviņš, head of RAKUS's oncological surgery clinic, explained that surgeons had to remove the peritoneum along with tumor-affected tissue as well as several organs. After the operation, the patient developed serious circulatory complications, temporarily losing the ability to move his arms and legs.

Condition has improved

Tjago's condition has since significantly improved. He is currently in the rehabilitation department at RAKUS's "Biķernieki" facility and is already able to walk again. He said the medical team's humane approach gave him a sense of security that everything would turn out well.

The case also proved a significant experience for young doctors. Residents Valērija Ševčuka and Marija Ribakova said the case gave them both professional and emotional experience, noting that not only the patient but also his family placed their trust in the medical team.

Debate over centralizing complex care

The case has raised broader questions about concentrating complex oncological surgeries in major medical centers. Before arriving at RAKUS, the patient had already been operated on at a hospital in Liepāja, but the procedure had to be repeated in Riga. Sīviņš argued that Latvia should concentrate such complex operations in large centers, which would allow doctors to build up necessary experience and potentially avoid the need for repeat surgeries.

Tjago continues his rehabilitation and hopes to return to coaching football as soon as possible, though it will still take time before he can return to the pitch. Doctors' prognosis is described as good.
