Exhibition Concept

On Friday, July 31, at 5:00 PM, the glass art exhibition “Closer to Home” (Tuvāk mājām) by artist Anda Munkevica will open in the enfilade of Liepāja Museum at 16/18 Kūrmājas Prospect. The exhibition is inspired by the feeling of home – the place where the heart resides and identity is formed, according to Kristīne Muceniece, the museum's chief educator.

Content and Inspiration

Created specifically for this exhibition, the works focus on family memories, belonging to Kurzeme (Courland), and the values that shape identity. Personal experience intertwines with reflections on freedom, humanity, and conscience. The artist emphasizes that without identity, one is lost, and home is where the heart is. She describes glass as a material of light, allowing discovery of the unknown and experience of wonder.

Exhibition and Additional Elements

The display includes glass objects, sculptural solutions, and a spatial installation combining light, sound, and glass materiality. The exhibition is complemented by a sound piece by art scholar Ieva Kanepone, creating a dialogue between glass art and space.

Artist's Background

Anda Munkevica (born 1974) is a Latvian glass artist, a graduate of the Latvian Academy of Arts, who furthered her studies in the USA. She has held over 20 solo exhibitions and participated in over 100 exhibitions in 19 countries. She is also the founder of “AM Studio,” and her works can be seen at Riga Cathedral, the Brothers' Cemetery, the Zolitūde tragedy memorial, the Bank of Latvia, and elsewhere. She has received several awards for her creative work.

Duration

The exhibition at Liepāja Museum's enfilade will be on view until September 27, 2026. Photography and filming will take place at the opening for publicity purposes.
