Liepāja’s wastewater treatment plant protected from coastal erosion, but erosion shifts elsewhere

After five years of efforts, Liepāja’s wastewater treatment plant is now partially shielded from coastal erosion, while erosion intensifies in other areas, including Karosta.

Over the past five years, Liepāja’s wastewater treatment plant, located directly on the seashore, has become significantly better protected against coastal erosion. Both the offshore breakwater and the stone revetment have proved effective—the coastline in this section is actually growing, and the impact of wind and waves has diminished.

However, the problem has not been solved everywhere. On the opposite side of the protective structure, erosion has increased, and it continues in the Karosta district, where the historic Northern Forts are gradually collapsing into the sea.
