Liepāja Regional Hospital invites expectant parents to tour maternity ward
During World Breastfeeding Week, Liepāja Regional Hospital is offering free daily tours of its maternity department for expectant parents to learn about childbirth facilities and the importance of breastfeeding.
Liepāja Regional Hospital is marking World Breastfeeding Week by inviting expectant parents to visit its maternity department. Free tours are available every day from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with no prior registration required. The maternity ward is on the second floor of the main building, next to the neonatal pathology and intensive care unit. Visitors should ring the doorbell and say they would like to join the tour.
Midwives suggest coming with one support person, preferably someone who will be present during the birth. They recommend arriving four to six weeks before the due date, which corresponds to the 30th to 34th week of pregnancy, or around the seventh month.
World Breastfeeding Week is observed annually during the first week of August. Its purpose is to highlight how important breastfeeding is for both mother and child. According to the hospital, breast milk is a unique natural food that adapts to the child's needs at each stage. It provides an ideal balance of proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals, as well as antibodies that strengthen the baby's immune system and protect against infections and allergies. Breastfeeding also supports emotional development – the closeness of feeding lets the baby hear the mother's heartbeat and feel her warmth, helping build a strong emotional bond and a sense of security.
For mothers, breastfeeding aids recovery after childbirth, lowers the risk of postpartum depression and brings a special sense of satisfaction from knowing they are giving their baby the best possible start.
