Liepāja woman wins court battle against debt collector over long-forgotten loan

A woman living in Liepāja has been through a lengthy legal dispute with one of the largest debt collection companies, stemming from a financial decision she made back in her youth, during the so-called "fat years" — a period of economic boom when taking out loans was common.

What the dispute was about

The loan appears to have been forgotten over the years, but the debt collection company later pursued the woman, demanding repayment. The central legal question in the case was whether a screenshot taken from a computer screen could serve as sufficient and reliable evidence in court to prove the debt existed and to compel the debtor to pay.

After reviewing the case, the court sided with the Liepāja woman, and the debt collection company lost the case. This means that, in this instance, the screenshot submitted as evidence was not deemed adequate grounds for the claim to recover the money.
