Heavy rains cause damage at seed-growing farm 'Krastmaļi' in Kurzeme – oil radishes lodged, pea crop fails

Prolonged rains in the Kurzeme region have partially lodged oil radish crops and waterlogged other fields at the seed-growing enterprise 'Krastmaļi', while the pea harvest has failed; however, red fescue has been successfully threshed and exported.

Following heavy rainfall in Kurzeme, the seed-growing company 'Krastmaļi', located in Dunalka parish of the South Kurzeme municipality, has experienced damage to its crops. Part of the oil radish fields have lodged – the plants have fallen and lie on the ground – while in some areas other crops are submerged in water. The pea harvest has been particularly poor and has essentially failed. However, the company successfully managed to thresh red fescue, which is being exported to Italy and other countries. 'Krastmaļi' specializes in seed production, and this year's weather conditions have yielded mixed results across different crops. Although several fields have suffered from excess moisture, the red fescue harvest meets quality standards and has already reached foreign markets. The enterprise continues to assess overall losses and plan for the next season.
