Nine-year-old girl dies in ATV accident in Lithuania
A nine-year-old girl died over the weekend in an ATV accident in the Kelmė district of Lithuania after being thrown from the vehicle during a turn.
A weekend outing with all-terrain vehicles ended in tragedy in Lithuania's Kelmė district, where a nine-year-old girl lost her life in a crash, according to the news portal tv3.lt.
The girl was reportedly riding as a passenger in a vehicle driven by her godfather, while her father was riding alongside on a separate quad bike. While making a turn in a clearing in the Raudgirė forest, the vehicle tipped onto its side. The girl fell out and was run over by the vehicle. Her injuries proved fatal despite the severity of the situation.
Eyewitness account
A local resident named Algirdas, who lives near the site, said both vehicles had passed by his house shortly before the accident. About 10 to 12 minutes later, one of the drivers returned, stopped near his yard and asked for help, saying the girl was unconscious. He said he initially did not understand what had happened.
Police investigation
Lithuanian police said the buggy, a Polaris RZR, was driven by a man born in 1988 who was travelling through a forest meadow. While turning, he reportedly failed to choose a safe speed for the maneuver. The man was detained by police following the crash. An investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy is ongoing.
