Lithuania sets date for next local elections
Lithuania's parliament has decided that mayoral and municipal council elections will take place on March 7 next year, with 1,494 council members and 60 mayors to be elected.
Lithuania's parliament voted on Thursday to set March 7, 2027 as the date for the country's next mayoral and municipal council elections. The resolution passed unanimously, with 103 MPs voting in favour and no votes against or abstentions.
The elections will fill 1,494 municipal council seats, four fewer than in the 2023 vote. In addition, 60 mayors will be elected. Mayoral positions do not carry municipal council mandates, so mayors are counted separately from the total number of council members.
Municipal elections in Lithuania are held every four years, meaning the upcoming vote continues the country's regular cycle of local governance renewal.
