Lithuania to take command of NATO mine countermeasures group
A change of command ceremony for NATO Standing Mine Countermeasures Group 1 will take place on Tuesday at Klaipėda’s Cruise and Warship Terminal, with the Lithuanian Navy assuming leadership.

On Tuesday, a change of command ceremony for NATO Standing Mine Countermeasures Group 1 (SNMCMG1) will be held at the Cruise and Warship Terminal in Klaipėda. The command of each NATO naval group rotates every six months, and this time the Lithuanian Navy will take the lead. The military has described this as a significant step for the Lithuanian Navy.
There are four standing naval groups under NATO’s Allied Maritime Command. The core of the mine countermeasures group consists of minehunters and minesweepers, while other groups are composed of frigates and other combat vessels. This rotation underscores Lithuania’s growing contribution to NATO’s collective defense.
