Lithuanian rheumatologist Audrius Gocentas dies suddenly at work as colleagues try to revive him

Rheumatologist Audrius Gocentas collapsed on arriving at the Antakalnis polyclinic on the morning of 6 October and later died. A pre-trial investigation has been opened to establish the cause of death.

The sudden death of rheumatologist Audrius Gocentas has drawn wide attention in Lithuania. The doctor died at the Antakalnis polyclinic, where he worked. Staff at Utena hospital announced the loss on Facebook, saying he was loved and respected by colleagues and patients alike. The news was also carried by tv3.lt, citing Lithuanian media.

What happened

The first call to the emergency service was received around 8:15 a.m. on 6 October. It reported that a doctor working at the polyclinic, born in 1965, had suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness after arriving for work.

Emergency medical crews who rushed to the scene found the doctor unconscious. Several medical teams spent about an hour and a half trying to resuscitate him, but his death was ultimately confirmed.

Investigation

A pre-trial investigation has been launched to determine the cause of death.

What is known about the doctor

Utena hospital confirmed that the deceased was rheumatologist Audrius Gocentas. According to publicly available online sources, he also held a sports medicine licence. A 2009 article on BasketNews mentioned that he had long served as a doctor for the basketball club Lietuvos Rytas.
