Lithuania approves €56.6 million for schools for German troops' children
Lithuania's government has approved €56.6 million to build and renovate schools in Vilnius and Kaunas for children of German troops stationed in the country. The move stems from a defence cooperation agreement between the two countries.
Lithuania's government has signed off on €56.6 million in funding to construct and renovate schools in Vilnius and Kaunas, intended to educate the children of German soldiers deployed to the country along with their families.
Two separate projects
In Vilnius, a new school for roughly 500 to 600 pupils is planned on Drujos Street, while in Kaunas an existing school on Verkių Street will be reconstructed to hold about 200 pupils. The Vilnius project receives €45.87 million of the total, with €10.75 million going to the Kaunas facility. Both will draw on state budget funds and government borrowing, covering everything from design to construction and equipment.
The Kaunas school is scheduled to open in September 2028, while the Vilnius school must be finished by 2032 at the latest.
Tied to defence cooperation
The funding decision follows a defence cooperation agreement between Lithuania and Germany, in which Lithuania pledged to build educational infrastructure for the families of German military personnel. Germany intends to station between 4,000 and 5,000 troops in Lithuania by the end of 2027, and some soldiers from the brigade, along with their families, have already begun arriving or are preparing to do so.
