As Lithuania nears the end of drafting next year's state budget, Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius announced that the government plans to raise pensions by roughly 10%, which would mean an average increase of €75–76 per month, according to the Lithuanian outlet Lrytas.

The prime minister said the need to raise pensions has already been discussed with the president, and the matter will soon be brought before the coalition council. He noted that the president has been informed of the plan, though it still requires political approval.

Sinkevičius acknowledged that the country has many needs while resources remain limited, adding that the government also intends to keep increasing defense spending even as the economy grows.

What the ministry previously projected

Lithuania's Ministry of Social Security and Labour had earlier estimated that the base pension increase next year should reach 8.51%, with Minister Inga Ruginienė suggesting additional indexation could add roughly another 1.5%. This year, old-age pensions in Lithuania rose by an average of 12%, and the pension requiring the full insurance record reached €810, as set out in the 2026 budget approved by the Seimas.

Lithuania's president has also submitted a bill to the Seimas that would require at least 20% of additional funds allocated for pension indexation to be used in certain years — setting a minimum floor, while the government would determine the exact amount.

The situation in Latvia

In Latvia, the minimum old-age pension for someone with at least 20 years of insured work history is €255.60 per month as of January 1, rising by €4.26 for each additional year of coverage. The average old-age pension in 2026 is around €600 per month. In October, pensions were indexed using a coefficient of 1.0424 — for example, a pension of €610 rose to €641.84 after indexation. The exact pension amount depends on an individual's work record and lifetime social insurance contributions.
