Lithuanian government resigns, new coalition expected
The Lithuanian coalition government led by Inga Ruginienė resigned on Tuesday, paving the way for a new coalition led by the Social Democrats, with no expected impact on foreign policy including support for Ukraine.

Lithuania's coalition government headed by Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė resigned on Tuesday, as announced during a cabinet meeting. The resignation was anticipated, as the largest party in the Seimas, the Social Democrats, had already agreed to form a new cabinet with two partners after the current ruling coalition collapsed.
The Social Democrats decided to end cooperation with the populist party Dawn of Neman. The new coalition will include the Union of Peasants, Greens and Christian Families of Lithuania and the Union of Democrats For Lithuania.
On June 25, the President will present the candidacy of Social Democrat leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius for Prime Minister to the Seimas. His party will retain a majority in the new cabinet. The change of government is not expected to affect Lithuania's foreign policy, including support for Ukraine.
The Social Democrats won the elections in 2024. The government formed then under Gintautas Paluckas resigned in 2025 after a corruption scandal and was replaced by the Ruginienė cabinet.
