Lithuanian Artist Lina Lapelytė Invites Visitors to Become Performers at Tate Modern
Lithuanian artist Lina Lapelytė has launched an interactive installation at London’s Tate Modern, where up to 300 visitors can simultaneously contribute to creating music and choreography as part of the 'Tate Play' programme.
The Turbine Hall of London’s Tate Modern now hosts an interactive installation by Lithuanian artist Lina Lapelytė. Created specifically for the gallery’s renowned space, the work titled "Serendipity Island" (in Lithuanian: Atsitiktinumų sala) invites visitors to become active participants rather than passive viewers. Lapelytė explains that the piece was commissioned under the museum’s "Tate Play" programme, which emphasises audience engagement.
In this installation, up to 300 people can take part at once. They learn individual scores before navigating a labyrinth, where their actions contribute to an evolving musical and choreographic performance. The artist hopes that participants will feel free to play and improvise, while remaining mindful that every action influences the collective experience. "It is about understanding that everything we do is connected," Lapelytė said, noting that participants are both observed and part of a stage for people.
The London venue holds particular significance for Lapelytė, who studied, lived, and now teaches in the city. Being invited to create for one of its most prestigious galleries is especially meaningful. Lapelytė is widely recognised for co-creating the opera "Good Day" and the opera-performance "Sun & Sea", which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale. Her other current exhibitions include shows at the Medina Triennial in New York and in Berlin.
"Serendipity Island" will be on display at Tate Modern until the end of August.
