League Cup: Brighton stun Manchester United, fourth-tier Fleetwood earn Arsenal tie

Manchester United suffered a 2-3 defeat to Brighton in the last 16 of the English League Cup, despite making a strong start to the match. Nineteen-year-old Shea Lacey opened the scoring in the eighth minute, and Mason Mount soon doubled the lead to make it 2-0.

However, Brighton, currently sitting with a solid Premier League record of 2-1-1 this season and having reached the UEFA Conference League group stage over the summer, took control as the game progressed. Young Greek talent Charalampos Kostoulas pulled a goal back for the visitors just before half-time, making it 2-1. In the second half, veteran German player Pascal Gross equalised, and Belgian forward Maxim De Cuyper put Brighton ahead just minutes later. Brighton will face either Manchester City or Norwich in the quarter-finals.

Fleetwood's shock win

One of the biggest upsets saw League Two (fourth-tier) club Fleetwood Town defeat Championship side Sheffield United 1-0. The club, founded in 1908 and never having played above the third tier, secured the winning goal via an own goal from Wales international defender Rhys Norrington-Davies shortly before the hour mark. As a reward, Fleetwood will host Premier League champions Arsenal.

Birmingham's Aston Villa beat Coventry 3-1 away, with Tammy Abraham scoring twice and Ross Barkley contributing a goal and an assist. In other last-16 matches, Arsenal advanced to the quarter-finals with a 4-2 win over Ipswich, while Liverpool defeated Tottenham 3-1.
