Despite police warnings of increased checks, 20 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence on Līgo day (Midsummer's Eve). Seven were caught in the Vidzeme region, four each in the Rīga region, Latgale, and Zemgale, and one in Kurzeme. Over the first four days of the Midsummer holidays, starting June 20, police have detained a total of 61 drunk drivers.

This year, during the first four holiday days, three people have died and 51 have been injured in traffic accidents. Last year, 15 were injured and one died during the Midsummer period.
