The State Police arrested 20 drivers for drunk driving on Līgo Day, despite prior warnings about intensified traffic controls during the Jāņi holidays. In total, from June 20 to 23, the first four days of the celebration, 61 drunk drivers have been caught in Latvia.

Most were detained in Vidzeme – seven. Four each in the Riga region, Latgale, and Zemgale, and one in Kurzeme. Of those arrested, 14 face criminal charges due to severe intoxication, leading to confiscation of their vehicles or recovery of the vehicle's value.

Police have promised to continue enhanced surveillance today and tomorrow, focusing on drivers under the influence of alcohol or other substances. The force reiterates the importance of sobriety behind the wheel. If alcohol has been consumed during festivities, one should plan a safe ride home in advance and prevent friends or relatives from driving drunk. "Often a timely conversation or taking away the car keys can prevent a tragedy," police note.

This year's Jāņi holiday period is exceptionally long, which often correlates with a higher number of severe accidents. Last year, 15 people were injured and one died during the Jāņi holidays. This year, in the first four days alone, three people have died and 51 have been injured.
