South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster announced on Monday, July 13, the appointment of Darlene Graham Nordon to the US Senate, replacing her brother, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham. Graham died suddenly on July 11 at age 71 due to aortic dissection. McMaster, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, made the appointment less than 48 hours after the senator's death.

Trump stated on Monday that he had recommended the governor appoint Graham's sister to fill the vacancy. In his announcement, McMaster said it was an honor to ask his younger sister to complete his work.

Lindsey Graham had met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on July 10 and visited the production facility of defense company SkyFall, which manufactures various drone models. Zelenskyy expressed condolences over Graham's death, stating that America and the world had lost a resolute leader.
