Līvāni launches centenary celebrations with diverse events
Līvāni, which gained city status on June 7, 1926, has begun its centenary celebrations. The first cycle included concerts, sports, a baby festival, rhododendron planting, and a discussion on legacy.

The town of Līvāni, officially designated a city on June 7, 1926, is marking its 100th anniversary this year. The initial series of events has already taken place, bringing together local residents, honorary citizens, amateur art groups, and municipal representatives.
On the eve of the celebrations, June 6, the Rožupe stage hosted a concert performance titled “Dzīres,” featuring local amateur collectives and guest artists. Meanwhile, at the youth center “Kvartāls,” a sports event called “Nakts Kedās” was held, where for the first time city council members and youth teams competed in street basketball. The youth team won 20:14, but the main outcome was informal interaction and shared positive emotions.
On June 7, Līvāni's actual 100th birthday, festivities continued. A special holiday train traveled through the city, offering residents a new perspective on significant locations. The Līvāni County Cultural Center hosted the Baby Festival, honoring infants born between July 1, 2025, and May 31, 2026. Musical entertainment was provided by Vineta Elksne and her daughters.
In Meža Square, the traditional rhododendron planting took place, with honorary citizens and their families planting shrubs as a symbolic gift to the city. A key event was the discussion “Legacy for Līvāni’s Next Century,” where honorary citizens deliberated on values and experiences to pass on to future generations. The discussion was accompanied by musical performances, including the Preiļi Purpura choir and Dainis Skutelis.
In the afternoon, an ecumenical prayer service was held at the Liberation Monument, where clergy from various denominations and residents prayed for the city's future. Throughout the celebrations, a local history exhibition titled “Līvāni 100: From a Market Town of Merchants and Craftsmen to a City with County Center Status” was on display and will remain at the Central Library until July 18.
Municipal officials emphasize that these events are just the beginning. The next festivities are scheduled for July 17 and 18, when Līvāni City Days will offer a broad program of culture, sports, art, and entertainment for all ages.
