Liverpool suffer first Champions League loss as Fenerbahce come back from two leads
English club Liverpool lost 3-2 away to Turkey's Fenerbahce in the Champions League after twice surrendering the lead. It is Liverpool's first defeat in this season's competition.

English football club Liverpool lost 3-2 to Turkey's Fenerbahce in Istanbul in a UEFA Champions League league-phase match, Europe's top club competition. It is Liverpool's first defeat in this season's tournament: they had won all their earlier games, and four of the eight league-phase matches have now been played. For Fenerbahce it was the first win of their Champions League campaign.
Liverpool, managed by Andoni Iraola, went ahead twice, but each time held the advantage for only four minutes. Iraola made five changes from the team that lost to Arsenal three days earlier, leaving several big names, including Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, on the bench.
How the match unfolded
19-year-old Trey Nyoni stayed in the starting lineup. In the 25th minute he scored his first professional goal, a deflected volley that wrong-footed Ederson, the Fenerbahce goalkeeper. Four minutes later Mason Greenwood's free-kick struck Jeremy Jacquet and left Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson stranded.
Isak, Wirtz and Cody Gakpo were brought on to chase a winner. Following a Gakpo cross, Isak headed in unmarked in the 69th minute, scoring with his first touch. In the 73rd minute, miscommunication between Gakpo and Alisson allowed Archie Brown to equalise. Six minutes later Vedat Muriqi headed in from a high cross to put Fenerbahce in front.
Liverpool's next fixture is in the Premier League, England's top football division.
