Liverpool confirm signing of Japanese midfielder Mao Itamura
Liverpool Women have completed the signing of 19-year-old Mao Itamura from Feyenoord. The Japanese attacking midfielder was named Eredivisie Player of the Season for 2025-26.

Liverpool have strengthened their women's squad with the acquisition of attacking midfielder Mao Itamura from Feyenoord. The 19-year-old Japanese talent becomes the fifth summer signing for manager Gareth Taylor.
Itamura replaces Republic of Ireland international Denise O'Sullivan, who moved to Gotham FC on an initial loan deal. During her time at Feyenoord, Itamura made a significant impact, scoring eight goals and providing six assists in the Dutch top flight last season. Her performances earned her the Women's Eredivisie Player of the Season award for 2025-26.
She played a key role in helping Feyenoord qualify for European competition for the first time in the club's history. Additionally, she was part of the Japan Under-20 squad that won the Women's Asian Cup in April.
Itamura expressed her delight at joining Liverpool, stating that the club was one of her targets and that she is happy to have the opportunity to play for such a big club. She began her career in Japan with JFA Academy Fukushima before moving to Feyenoord in January 2025. At Liverpool, she will wear the number 26 shirt.
She follows fellow new arrivals Vivien Endemann, Sara Agrez, Mari Ward, and Khiara Keating into the squad.
