The trial of British comedian and broadcaster Russell Brand, 51, began on Wednesday, 14 October, at Southwark Crown Court in London. He faces charges of rape and sexual offences against six women, and the verdict will determine whether he is found guilty of those allegations.

The charges

Brand is charged with three counts of rape, three of sexual assault and one of indecent assault. The alleged offences date from 1999 to 2009. He has pleaded not guilty to every charge.

Proceedings were scheduled to start at 10am. The prosecution is expected to deliver opening statements outlining the overall case against him. A jury was sworn in the previous day, and the judge, Mr Justice Bennathan, told jurors to disregard earlier media coverage of Brand and of allegations of sexual misconduct.

Arrival at court

Brand was driven to the court in a black Mercedes-Benz van that stopped directly outside the building, where reporters and photographers had gathered. He stayed in the vehicle for about a minute, then stepped out wearing a dark suit, a black-and-white striped shirt, a long white tie and sunglasses. He took the hand of his wife, Laura Gallacher, and the two walked towards the court together.

Speaking to the media, Brand said he felt "concerned but hopeful" that the process would lead to good outcomes for everyone involved. According to the Press Association, members of the press began gathering outside the court hours before the hearing; by about 7.30am photographers, video journalists and news presenters were in position. Court security staff and a small group of police officers were also present.
