In East London, a new founder house called Lift House is positioning itself as the anti-San Francisco hacker house. Home to six residents in their twenties, it aims for a holistic improvement in life rather than a relentless focus on Demo Day, according to Rowan Aldean, 26, who sold his previous company for millions and now runs an applied AI startup.
The house, which opened in March 2026, features six stories overlooking the water. Unlike typical Silicon Valley hacker houses known for 72-hour work sprints, Lift House residents practice Sunday journaling, play volleyball on Tuesdays, and cook together. One resident, Wan Ying L, 25, plays the piano in the living room.
London’s tech ecosystem is described as less showy and less startup bro-y than San Francisco’s. So far in 2026, London AI startups have raised $12 billion out of $14.7 billion raised by all London startups, according to Dealroom. Six companies, including Wayve and Superintelligence, have raised over $500 million.
Despite London’s advantages—access to top talent from Oxbridge and a favorable time zone—many founders eventually move to the U.S. for larger funding opportunities. Aldean notes that British culture often penalizes excessive success, a phenomenon known as “tall poppy syndrome.” Lift House aims to prove one can build a lasting company without burning out.
