Long Island Serial Killer Sentenced to Life Without Parole
Architect Rex Heuermann received a life sentence without parole for murdering eight women. The prosecutor described him as a cruel and sadistic serial killer who views taking lives as sport.

Rex Heuermann, a Long Island architect, was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murders of eight women, according to CNN.
The investigation began years ago involving missing sex workers. Heuermann confessed to killing eight women over a 17-year period from 1993 to 2010. The sentence came two months after he pleaded guilty to seven murders and later confessed to an eighth.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney stated in court that Heuermann feels no remorse for his victims—only regret that he was caught. Tierney called him a "cruel and sadistic serial killer who only cares about himself."
During the hearing, Tierney presented a planning document found by investigators. In it, Heuermann had "methodically planned" how to select, kill, and dispose of his victims. The prosecutor likened the document to a math problem or a shopping list, emphasizing that it showed the victims meant nothing to him. "Taking lives is sport for him," Tierney said.
Tierney also noted that Heuermann constantly purchased prepaid phones and created new email accounts, believing this would prevent identification. He visited websites of sex workers and pornography sites depicting torture and dismemberment of women.
The prosecutor described Heuermann as a psychopath who "only cares about himself and his sick interests, unable to care about anyone else, including his family." Heuermann was arrested in 2023. The case relied on mobile phone records linking him to victims and a pickup truck seen near one victim's home. The murders occurred when his wife and children were out of town.
